Artist Analysis & Pastiche Sketchbook Project
Welcome to Your Final Project!
This is a project that will allow you to do some exploring and creating on your own, with a little guidance from any of your favourite (or new found favourite) artists - and from me, of course.
This is a project that will allow you to do some exploring and creating on your own, with a little guidance from any of your favourite (or new found favourite) artists - and from me, of course.
The Goal:
Decide on an artist of your choosing and do an Artist Analysis (a critical and creative breakdown through observation checklists, short descriptions, and drawing/painting from the artists work) and finally a Pastiche (a creation of an art piece based on the artist's style: subject matter, themes, materials, techniques etc.).

Now, since this is is a combination of remote learning AND in-class learning for those coming into the school this month, I will present and assess the project as so. I know that most of you will be limited in time and supplies, so I will be very open with this one for you to just do what you can.
- Some of you don't have your sketchbooks: the examples are done in students' sketchbooks; however, you can either piece it together on paper, or put it together digitally in a slide deck...or both!
- Some of you don't have the supplies you may need for the artist you choose: adapt and use something else, that's okay. You could focus on media and technique with your artist if you have the supplies you need, but if you are very limited to basics, just focus on the breakdown of what they do generally, like subject matter and themes.
- This is a very broad and open-ended project and some of you may feel overwhelmed and stuck: yes, there is a lot of choice here, but that's the fun part! It is going to rely heavily on your own initiative and critical thinking; however, I will be available every step of the way via in-classroom support, private message, email, or zoom! I will be asking for regular progress uploads for which I can provide feedback and answer questions.
The Project (with student examples)
BIG IDEAS
1. An artist’s intention transforms materials into two-dimensional art.
2. Visual arts are an essential element of culture and personal identity.
3. Refining artistic expression requires perseverance, resilience, and risk taking.
4. Purposeful artistic choices enhance depth and meaning in artistic works.

Sketchbook Artist Analysis and Pastiche
Your completed Artist Analysis and Pastiche Project should result in a finished product that visually reflects the style of the artist. The more research and deeper the analysis, the better your results will demonstrate your understanding of the artist.
CHOOSE SEVERAL COMPONENTS BELOW (OR DO ALL OF THEM, IF YOU CAN):
(Step-by-step instructions for all components are in the pdf attached at the bottom)

CHOOSE SEVERAL COMPONENTS BELOW (OR DO ALL OF THEM, IF YOU CAN):
(Step-by-step instructions for all components are in the pdf attached at the bottom)
- If you have your sketchbook: 1 or 2 Spreads (facing pages in your sketchbook - backgrounds embellished with artist "style")
- If you don't have your sketchbook: work on loose paper or you could create an artist styled background for your slides by photographing hand-done work (if you need help doing this, just ask).
- Artist Name as Creative Title: create by hand or choose a font style that you think represents your artist's style
- Bio/Artist Overview
- Include 2 images of your chosen artist's work
- Analysis Form filled out for one of those prints (this will be a Google Form)
- 5 Annotations (see file below - elaborate on analysis info from form / create new notes)
- 2 Thumbnail Sketches (1 Full and 1 Detail (close up of a section) in 2 different mediums if possible)
- 1 Re-Creation: literally recreate one of the images chosen above, as closely as you can
- 1 Pastiche (from a found image with similar subject matter [include when handing in]) that demonstrates what you've learned about the artist's style (see examples in PDF below).

*Important: Please note that I could not, for the life of me, find my original Slide Deck to change the info in this PDF to suit our remote situation so please take into consideration that some adjustments will need to me be made (to be more suited to the notes above). Be creative with it :)
